Team Description
The AI Foundations team plays a central role in actualizing Capital One's AI vision. Our endeavors encompass the full research lifecycle, from partnerships with top academic institutions to building robust production systems. We collaborate with product, technology, and business leaders to apply the latest advancements in AI across our operations.
In this role, you will
- Collaborate with a talented team of data scientists, software engineers, machine learning engineers, and product managers to create AI-driven experiences that redefine customer engagement with their finances.
- Utilize a diverse tech stack including Pytorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning, VectorDBs, and more to uncover insights from extensive volumes of numerical and textual data.
- Develop AI foundation models through every phase of their lifecycle: design, training, evaluation, validation, and implementation.
- Participate in high-impact applied research to harness the latest in AI developments, contributing to the advancement of customer experiences.
- Use your interpersonal skills to clearly articulate the complexities of your work into actionable business strategies.

- Demonstrates experience in constructing large deep learning models across different domains (language, images, events, or graphs) with expertise in areas such as training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, and explainability.
- Holds an engineering mindset with a proven record of delivering scalable models in terms of both training data and inference loads.
- Experienced in contributing to libraries or platform-level code within existing products.
- Proven track record of innovation in machine learning, evidenced by substantial publications or notable projects.
- Able to independently lead and execute a research agenda, identifying impactful problems and engaging in long-term projects.
Basic Qualifications
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields, or an M.S. in a related field with relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD focused on NLP or equivalent experience with a strong publication record in large language models.
- Experience with large model training and optimization with publications in leading AI conferences.
- Deep understanding of optimization techniques for training and inference of large deep learning models.
